Just cause u got the lottery doesn't mean u win the grand prize

Cleveland cavaliers got the lottery for the draft, the 1st and 4th pick.  They are predicted to pick Kyle Irving as their 1st overall pick.  I don't think that's smart.  They should take someone with a little bit more college experience like the bigger and stronger derrick willaiams, and then take kemba walker at 4th and I think that would be much better picks to rebuild their team around.

Sometimes Even The Experts Get it Wrong

So the NFL draft is finally over and im glad it is. I don't know about you but im tired of ESPN annalyst's projecting a new mock draft every week just for them to get mostly every pick wrong. Just tell me how good the player is and what team needs to fill that position! On another note, many annalyst's believe Cam Newton will be a bust as a number 1 pick and one group went as far as calling his smile fake. This scrutinizing should be frowned upon because it has nothing to do with football or even Newton's character, but it's more like a random insult which was unneccesary. I believe Newton will do just fine, even with the bad team he is in. Don't believe me? Keep these two things in mind. They made the playoffs a couple of years ago which means most of that team is still intact. Also Tampa Bay was horrible two seasons ago but last year drafted a decent (not Newton caliber) qb in Josh Freeman and in his first year he nearly took them to the playoffs. So with a ton of doubt on Cam, I hope he shines in Carolina.

Nba first round playoffs rap up

The most surprising finish to the first round is the number 8 seed Memphis grizzles beating the number 1seed San Antonio spurs 4-2 in a 7 game series.  Some analysis believed it would be a good match up because Memphis has big players to match up with the spurs and they proved that they were the difference maker in that series.  This is only the second time a 8th seed beat a number 1 in the past ten years.  Oklahoma city, LA lakers, and Dallas also advance in the west.  In the east Atlanta also upset the Orlando magic in the 4-5 match. They also beat them 4-2 in the series. Chicago,Boston and also Miami advanced to the next round. This second round will be interesting to watch.

Another NBA prospect from Long Island New York

I Love to see players that i watched play High school basketball in long island make it to the NBA. I only know of two players off the top of my head that is currently playing in the NBA and played at a high school in long island, and that's Danny Green from North Babylon and A.J Price from Amityville. Now There's another player that played at Half Hollow Hills West named Tobias Harris who has entered his name into the 2011 draft after one year of playing college basketball at Tennessee. He had a great career in high school and played a very important role on the Tennessee team. I hope he goes on to have a good career in the NBA and represent well for long island.

The Rise and Fall of Athletes: A History Lesson- The Black Sox

Way before the steroid scandals of the 90's and 2000's, MLB had a plethora of other issues it had to combat. In 1919, the Chicago White Sox reached the World Series and where very close to attaining baseball's ultimate prize. But rather then seizing the opportunity to be major league champs, 8 members of the team decided to take another approach. These players, including the mastermind of the plan and their first baseman Arnold Gandil, planned and went forth in throwing the World Series. They took such drastic action due to resentment toward their club owner, Charles Comiskey, whom they disliked because of his well know reputation as a underpaying owner. A year later the incident was investigated and the eight players where banned from the MLB for life. Imagine this took place in any sport today? It would surely be a HUGE story. The actions of these players when faced with the chance to win a title was selfish and will always be synonymous with the many scandals thorugh baseballs 100+ years of existance.

The hero in Portland

The Portland Trailbrazers found themselves in a whole when they came back home down 0-2 in a best of 7 game series against Dallas.  Portland was in desperate need of a spark from a player on the team to help them win both home games.  The spark came surprisingly from Brandon Roy.  He was a 2006-07 rookie of the year and a 3 time all-star.  But Roy unfortunately had double knee surgery this year and has no cartilage in his knees.  The past two seasons Roy hasn't been playing much because of injury.  This year after surgery he was reinserted into the line up but coming off the bench with limited minutes.  Roy complained about not playing more minutes during the series after game 2 and during game 3 when he got more minutes he showed why he deserved more minutes.  He scored 16 points in game 3 to help them win 97-92.  In game 4 Portland was in a deep hole down 18 points in the 4th quarter.  Roy put the team on his back with 24 points off the bench and scoring or assisting the last 16 points.  That game was very interesting and the rest of the series should be.

Yankees Keep Winning, Boston Creeping Closer

Pic via yahoosports
Prior to the baseball season every sports writer and radio personnel I've heard from had Boston winning the A.L. East and some even had them winning it all. With that being said, they started off extremely slow and posted a 0-6 record through their first few games. But as of late, they have picked up their play and have done so with massively improved pitching from their starters. As for their long time rivals, the Yankees continue to play good baseball and pulled off a win earlier today after Mo (Mariano Rivera for those that don't know) gave up the lead in the bottom of the 9th in Baltimore. With the win, the Yankees stay atop the A.L. East while the other teams, which many "sports people" favored going into the season, play catch up. In all, this will be a grueling season for the improved Red Sox and the consistent Yankees.

can we blame it on the refs?

This post is all about the knicks vs celtics playoff series. The knicks lost the first to games of the series by a very narrow margin.  Throughout the whole game while I watched I felt like the referees were not calling the game completely fair.  I know its not easy for refs because they have to make split second decisions on plays.  Down the stretch in both games the refs made or didn't make some key calls that had a major effect on the outcome of the game.  The series is still best out of 7 so boston still has to win two more games but this deficit isn't not to there advantage.  Also the knicks will be dealing with injuries with two of their three stars Chancey Billups and Amare Stoudamaire. Amare will be playing but with his bad back a lot of minutes is sure out of him. A lot will be riding on Carmello Anthony's shoulder tonight if the knicks want any chance to win.  Carmello had 42 points in the second game but that still wasn't enough so someone else will need to step up.

Pivotal Game for Defending Champs

pic via yahoosports.com
I am currently watching the Lakers vs. the Hornets game 2 and I'm starting to realize how big of a game it is. Apparently Kobe Bryant feels the same as I do. Bryant's has decided to guard Chris Paul tonight who, in the previous playoff game, scorched the Lakers to lead his team to a huge upset win. So tonight is a HUGE game because if the Lakers are down 2-0 going to New Orleans, it's sure to be a up-hill battle for their aging team. I would personally like the Lakers to win this series because realistically, they are the better team. But fueled off adrenaline and a little luck, any team can win as we've seen in the past.

NBA Playoffs

Picture via yahoosports.com
With the playoffs finally here, many didn't expect the upsets that have taken place so far. With the favorites in the West both going down, many are questioning the strength of the Ginobly-less Spurs and the defending champ Lakers. I do not think its panic time for the Lakers due to their talent and depth but as for the Spurs, their oppenent (Memphis) actually wanted the challenge of taking on San Antonio. So heres what I see plays out from some of the series' ill be watching...

San Antonio loses to Memphis 2-4
L.A. beats N.O. 4-1
OK.C. beats Denver 4-3
Miami sweeps Phily 4-0

Tell us what you see happening and enjoy the playoffs!!!

The Rise and Fall of Athletes: Roger Clemens

Pic via atozsportsblog
Roger Clemens was a MLB pitcher for many years and was well accomplished throught his career. Among his many accolades, he won the most Cy Young Awards (an annual award for baseballs best pitcher) in history with 7, he was an 11 time all-star, and he is one of four pitchers in history to have more than 4000 strikeouts. But with much success, his life and career has taken many blows along the way. He was named in The Mitchell Report (a document regarding steriod users) as a user of steroids. He has claimed his innocence repeatedly but most baseball people (including me) think hes guilty. He is also now on the verge of standing trial for perjury and other charges in relation to his denial under-oath of steroid use. The trial has already taken strange turns, with one accuser of Clemens and his former trainer, Brian Mcnamee stating that he injected Clemens with steroids and even kept the syringes to use as evidence if Clemens ever denied his usage. Another matter which has deminshed Clemens' legacy is his suspect affair with country music singer Mindy McCready. What sets this affair apart was that the then married Clemens was 28 and McCready was only 15. Clemens' unrational thinking throughout the years has got him neck deep in scandals and potential legal trouble. I guess our superstars aren't always who we think they are.

WNBA draft...already here

The number pick goes to Minnesota Lynx and they pick, to no one's surprise, Maya Moore, 2 time champion from UConn.  Maya had a great career at UConn even though she ended her career there with a lost in the Final Four and didn't get a chance to win a 3rd championship as part of the huskies. Maya has often been compared to the great Diana Tuarasi who led UConn under the same coach Geno Auriemma to 3 consecutive championships from 2001-2004.  Even though Maya didn't reach that same goal she did well in college and he hard work led her to being the number one draft pick.  I didn't recognize any of the other names in the drafts.  Most woman stay there four years in college before going to the WNBA unlike the NBA where men try to do just the minimum one year to be eligible to be in the draft.  Some of the players in the WNBA draft came from other countries.  I hope Maya has  great and successful career in the WNBA

The Rise and Fall of Athletes: OJ Simpson

Pic via 1800rant.com

We will start this segment with OJ Simpson. His accolades are well documented and span through many years. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1968 which is the top honors as a collegiate football player. He was also inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985. He was so well received by the public that he had a role in the classic movie The Naked Gun in 1988. But his stardom and public appeal began to diminish in 1995 when he was acquitted in the controversial trial for the murder of his then wife, Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. Now, after a string of numerous charges which include armed robbery and kidnapping, he is serving a 33 year prison term, with a minimum of 9 years without parole. This is probably the worst case in which a athlete has fallen from grace. The once "star" running back is now an inmate due to his actions, proving anyone can ruin there life if they have poor decision making.

The Rise and Fall of Athletes

Pic via celebitchy.com

From Floyd Landis to Tiger Woods, we have seen many, once prized and successful athletes, fall into the realm of unforgivingness. As sports fans, many of us are emotional vested in our favorite athletes. So when our #1 gets arrested or makes a public move not in our liking, we react. In this new segment, me and Jose will get more in depth with certain athletes stories and give you our oppinions on the issues. What we would like anyone reading this to understand is that although we encourage anyones interaction with sports, these players are humans like us. Everyone makes mistakes and instead of emotionaly vesting in these athletes, let us stray away from looking at them as role models and more like individuals with remarkable talents.

Believe in the unbelievable

My hero of the woman's ncaa final four is Skylar Diggins.  When I was watching the final four, like most other people, I expected a Stanford and Uconn win so it would be a rematch in the championship game. Texas A&M pulled off a surprising upset over Stanford in the final seconds.  But what Diggins did to Uconn blew my mind away.  She had 28 points and 6 assists against a team that only lost 1 game in their last 91 and the Irish lost to them the last 3 times they played.  Uconn simply didn't have an answer for her and despite all of Maya Moore's efforts it wasn't enough. I was very impressed with Skylar Diggins play and look forward to the championship game.

This Weeks Poll

Pic via yahoo.com
In this weeks poll we will discuss the Final Four. With the great amount of parity in the tournament, choosing a team to win it all is very difficult. In the latest odds, the Kentucky Wildcats are the current favorite to beat Connecticut by 2, and then they are favored by 2.5 to beat Butler in the title game. But many commentators love VCU, keeping in mind who and how they have defeated their opponents. So we ask you, who do you think is going to win? Take your pic on our poll located on the bottom of our blog.

Sudden Deaths to Teen Athletes Raise Concerns

Pic via cbsnews.com

This year, there has been an alarming number of headline deaths to student athletes. The most publicized story being the sudden death of Wes Leonard, the highschool basketball player from Michigan who went into cardiac arrest on the court just moments after hitting a game winning shot. His story, along with Matthew Hammerdofer and Wes Leonard's should be used as an example for other athletic programs accross the nation. Me and Jose discussed this issue and we agree that it is on the administrators and not the students or parents who determine if the student can play. Health screening should be tightened up to prevent tragedies like this from occurring. Should a student be allowed to play a sport if he/she has a serious health issue? Check our youtube channel at the bottom of the page to view Wes Leonards story.

Is this really happening....A final four with no No.1 seed teams???

March Madness has been very "mad" this year. People make bracket predictions and bet money in pools in hopes of getting it all correct and taking the pool of money home after the championship. Making a tournament bracket is a gamble. Most people wouldn't choose a final four without a No.1 seed but this year none of the no.1 seed teams made it to the final four. Less then 3% of people choose this final four correctly. Those are going to be the few people to take home the big money if they bet in a large pool.
The most shocking team to make the final is the No.11 seed Virginia Commonwealth University. The lowest seed to make the final four in recent history. 8th seed Butler, No.3 UConn, and the No.4 seed Kentucky all beat the odds of being in the Final Four.

Mello to N.Y.= $

Many N.Y fans love the Carmello Anthony trade from a basketball standpoint. But from a marketing point of view, the move was HUGE for Mello. With N.Y.'s big market comes many endoursement possibilities which equal more money in his pockets. This huge billboard above Penn Station already shows the money Mello can potentially bring N.Y. Imagine how many people see this a day? I also wouldn't be suprised to him in a Subway (sandwich) commercial in the near future, with their constant use of N.Y. athletes.

NFL lockout....Players take there talents to....elsewhere

Since the NFL lockout has taken effecting on players they have been trying to find other ways to utilize their free time.  Teams haven't been able to resume practice so some players are not sitting around and enjoying the extra free time.  Chad Ochocinco, Bengals star wide receiver,  use to play soccer in grade school up to 10th grade before switching over to football.  he's always been a big fan of soccer and is taking the free time he has now to try out for the Kansas city MLS team.  He is participating in the four day try out as a regular person trying to join the team.  Ten times the amount of media came to the first day of tryout then usual.  Chad isn't the only one trying to pursue other pro sports.  Ravens Safety Tom Zbikowski is trying to get his license to be a pro boxer.  I don't blame these players for taking advantage of their free time pursue other sports to get money because this lockout is ridiculous.

This Weeks Poll

Pic. via theusdaily.com
Today we will introduce a new segment, "This Weeks Poll". We will take a debatable topic, raise a question in relation to the topic, and ask for your opinion on it. So today we will discuss Carmello Anthony joining the Knicks. Since joining the team, New York's record is 7-9. Mello's previous team, the Denver Nuggets, are 10-4. It seems like sports writers are split in half in relation to this topic. Was this trade really worth it for the Knicks? Should they have pulled the gun on the trade rather than wait until the off-season to potentially sign him? Take to the poll to show us what you think! (Polls are located at the BOTTOM of our blog)

One legged national champion wrestler

Anthony Robles shocked the world by winning a national championship at 125 lb class representing Arizona State in wrestling.  Anthony was born without a one leg but that didn't stop him from wrestling. He got an award for best athlete with a disability but he was offended at first. He doesn't feel like he has a disability having an undefeated season. He's done with college wrestling and hopes to move on to be a motivational speaker.  Seeing his accomplishments he should be a motivation to everyone. Anything is possible if you put your all into it.

This Could be Jason Kidd's Last Year

via nba.com

With a potential NBA lock out upon us, which would could cancel next years season, comes news regarding a future Hall of Famer. Jason Kidd stated after a recent game that if next season was cancelled due to the lockout, he'd probably hang it up due to his age. "I probably would walk away because at 39, 40 years old, that is just too much for me to train and get back in shape" Kidd explained. If we are faced with a lockout (which in my opinion has a 90% chance of happening) then we will lose one of the top point guards to ever lace them up.

The penalty for sex

19 year old 6'9" forward Brandon Davies was suspended from the BYU basketball team for the rest of the season after admitting to having sex with his girlfriend.  The school has a strict honor code that all students must sign and agree to that include not using tobacco, alcohol, coffee and all illegal drugs. This code also includes no premarital sex and requires them to attend church services regularly.  This Mormon school has always had these codes and they didn't compromise their rules for their star starting forward that helped them gain top ranking in their conference. Athletes and young people break rules all the time but if they aren't hurting anyone why should they be so strict?  With his suspension coming two weeks before the ncaa tournament people feel like their championship run will be affected. This suspension hurts the team but it seems like the school cares more about their code then winning.  A few alumni became pros from this school but would you sacrifice your freedom as a student to go to a school for a chance at the pros even when you don't believe in their religion? Should athletes and religion be dealt with separately? Those students did sign on the dotted line so they must deal with the consequences.  I personally would rather stay away from that situation and go to a different school where I have religious and personal freedom.

WHAT A SHOT!!!!

via US Presswire

UConn's Kemba Walker hit an amazing game winning shot today in the second round of the Big East tournament at Madison Square Garden, thus guiding his team into the third round of play. As the defender fell to the floor, Walker calmly picked up his cross-over dribble and drained the two with no time left on the clock, sending No. 3 Pitt home until the NCAA Tournament. Walker, originally from the Bronx, has been playing superbly this year and has even been mentioned in player of the year discussions. After watching Walker's performance and specifically his game ending basket, I decided to post some of the NCAA Tournament's greatest buzzer beaters. Like the rest of the videos posted on our blog, the link can be found at the bottom of this page. ENJOY!

Tiki Barber returning to the NFL?

One of the leading rushers for years on the New york Giants is coming out of retirement after four years away from the game.  Tiki Barber was a well known running back that retired back in 2006.  When he retired people felt that he left the game too soon and still had some mileage under his legs. A year later the New York Giants won the NFL Championship and Tiki missed out on the chance to win a Championship.  Now Tiki says he sees his twin brother,  Ronde Barber, still playing as a safety for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and still having fun playing.  Tiki wants to explore the possibility of coming back to the league and possibly playing on the same team as his brother that signed a one year contract extension with Tampa Bay.  I don’t know how good Tiki will be when he comes back but I think this will effect his legacy even though it probably won’t keep him out of the hall of fame.  There are plenty of running backs in the NFL and if he returns he maybe a back up running back.  He is bringing attention to himself returning but I’m afraid he will be like a Brett Favre and continue playing longer then he should and bring negative attention to his legendary career.

The Heat is On

The Miami Heat have lost 4 straight games and some players where even left to tears following their latest performance verse the Chicago Bulls. Through this stretch, Miami has been facing some of the elite talent in the league (Spurs and Bulls). When facing decent to good competition Miami seems to find ways to lose games, whether it be the lack of bench support or missing clutch shots in the closing minutes. Although many sports writers and commentators alike are writing off the Heat and calling for the panic button to be pushed, we should all slow down. Changing the head coach or making a drastic move to the team at this point would cause the season to be lost. I believe the team and its chemistry is still a working progress and although I agree that Lebron and Wade are not a good working pair on the court together, this team is destined for the playoffs. A four game skid is something they should be concerned about but they are still 3rd in the East. Let us all relax and let this season progress before we call the 2010-2011 Miami Heat a failure.
